  1. c) The H.O.R.D.E. Festival. Blues Traveler frontman John Popper and his bandmates founded the H.O.R.D.E. Festival in 1992. An acronym that stands for “Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere.” The rootsy multi-artist summer tour featured legendary heavy hitters like Neil Young and popular young jam bands Phish and Spin Doctors.
  2. d) Jon Bon Jovi. Color Me Badd got their big break in 1987 after they spotted Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora at a mall in Oklahoma City. They performed an impromptu a cappella version of the song “Daddy’s Home”, and Bon Jovi was so blown away he invited them to open his show the next night in front of 20,000 people.
  3. a) Ethan Hawke. Lisa Loeb’s song “Stay (I Missed You)” from the 1994 film Reality Bites was the first number one single by an unsigned artist in the US. Loeb’s big break came when her neighbour actor Ethan Hawke, who was one of the stars of Reality Bites, submitted a demo tape of the song to director Ben Stiller. He liked it so much the song was added to the movie’s end credits.
  4. b) As I Lay Me Down. The song about the death of Sophie B. Hawkins father was actually written for her first record “Tongues and Tails” but the record label rejected it because it didn’t think the song would be a hit. Sophie disagreed but says she decided to keep her mouth shut and put the cassette of the song in a drawer and waited until the time was right to release it.
  5. d) Perform at a chicken wing bar. Before getting a record deal the Gin Blossoms were the house band at the iconic music and chicken wing venue Long Wong’s in Tempe, Arizona. Several other soon-to-be-famous bands also played at Long Wong’s on their way to fame including The Refreshments, Dead Hot Workshop, and The Pistoleros.
  6. b) Zip-Lock. Lit followed up their 1999 hit song “My Own Worst Enemy” with the single Zip-Lock which was also included in their 1999 album A Place in the Sun. The music video for Zip-Lock features a guest appearance by Mark Hoppus, Travis Barker, and Tom DeLonge of Blink-182 who portray naked partygoers. The spontaneous collab happened because members of Lit and Blink 182 were friends and often toured together.
  7. c) The Arsenio Hall Show. The song “Things That Make You Go Hmmmm…” which was included on C + C Music Factory’s 1990 debut album “Gonna Make You Sweat” was inspired by a popular segment on Arsenio Hall’s late night talk show. Hall would often ponder various thoughts and refer to them as “things that make you go hmmmm…”. The song took this phrase and turned it into a catchy and clever hook that helped it become a top ten hit.
  8. b) Doubt. Jesus Jones won the MTV Best New Artist award in 1991 for their album “Doubt”. The album includes some of their most well-known tracks, such as “Right Here, Right Now” and “Real, Real, Real.” The album eventually went platinum in the U.S. selling over one million copies.
  9. b) Doowutchyalike. The alter ego Humpty Hump which was created by Shock G (Gregory Edward Jacobs), the leader of Digital Underground first appeared in the song “Doowutchyalike” and became widely known through the hit single “The Humpty Dance. Humpty Hump is characterized by his distinctive appearance, which includes a large fake nose, sunglasses, and a colorful outfit.
  10. d) The Way. When “The Way” was released in January 1998, Fastball was relatively unknown, and the song took a few months to catch on. By the spring of 1998, the song which was inspired by the true story of an elderly couple who disappeared on a road trip, started getting a lot of airplay and eventually reached number one on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart where it stayed for three weeks.
  11. a) Loser. Everclear performed the title track from their third album “So Much for the Afterglow” in the 2000 teen movie Loser which was directed by Amy Heckerling. 12. b) December. The song was the first single off of Collective Soul’s self-titled second album. In addition to winning the award for Top Rock song at the Billboard Music Awards in 1995, the powerful song about loss and betrayal also topped the Billboard Rock chart for nine weeks.
